Statement Announcing Candidacy
Weymouth – Longtime Weymouth resident, Fred Happel, has officially announced his candidacy for Councilor-at-Large in the Town of Weymouth. He will be kicking-off his campaign with a big event, on Wednesday, April 26th at 6:00pm at the brand new McSwiggan’s Restaurant on 450 Washington Street, which will include an introduction by Mayor Bob Hedlund.
Fred, who has been involved in local politics for most of his life and has worked on numerous campaigns in the area, will be running for office for the first time since he served as a Weymouth Town Meeting member more than twenty years ago.
“I just decided it was time,” said Happel. “Weymouth is my home. I grew-up here and have a lot of friends in the town, and now I’m raising a family here as well. As my kids get older, I decided it was time to get more involved in the community, to make sure Weymouth remains a great place to live, and raise a family, for years to come.”
Fred credits Mayor Bob Hedlund, and the rejuvenated sense of pride he has brought to the town, for inspiring him to run, but said it was his family who made the final decision. After serving as Mayor Hedlund’s campaign manager, during his 2015 election campaign, Happel began to consider running for office, but it was the encouragement he received from his family and friends that finally convinced him to throw his name in the race.
“I think Mayor Hedlund, and his staff, have done a great job during their first year in office,” Happel said. “Weymouth is definitely a town on the rise, and I want to make sure that we continue to head in the right direction. There is a lot of work to be done, and nobody can do it alone. This is a team effort, and I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to help Weymouth thrive as a community.”
